Delaware Senate Republicans Applaud New Veterans Affairs Facility in Sussex County

The Delaware State Senate Republican Caucus is celebrating the announcement of a new medical facility in Sussex County, a move that is expected to significantly enhance healthcare access for veterans residing in southern Delaware. This step comes as part of the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) initiative to begin the competitive procurement process for leasing the new facility.

Currently, Sussex County has only 11,155 net usable square feet (NUSF) of space dedicated to veterans’ services. The new facility, however, will provide approximately 136,000 NUSF, vastly expanding the area available for veterans' healthcare. This growth will greatly improve access to essential services at the Sussex County Community-Based Outpatient Clinic, bringing vital care closer to the veterans who need it most.

A Win for Southern Delaware Veterans

Senate Republican Leader Gerald Hocker (R-Ocean View) expressed his gratitude for this long-awaited development. “We are incredibly grateful for this long-awaited progress, which will benefit veterans across lower Delaware,” Hocker said. “Providing easier access to high-quality healthcare for our veterans is a responsibility we take seriously. This new facility is a major step toward ensuring that Sussex County’s veterans receive the care and respect they have earned.”

The new facility is expected to have a transformative effect on veterans’ access to healthcare, particularly in an area where long-distance travel can be a significant barrier. Senator Dave Lawson (R-Marydel), a Vietnam combat veteran, emphasized the profound impact the facility will have on veterans living in lower Kent and Sussex counties.

"For too long, veterans in southern Delaware have faced significant challenges in accessing healthcare, with the closest VA hospital located in Elsmere," said Senator Lawson. "This new facility will bring critical services closer to home, particularly for older and disabled veterans who struggle with long-distance travel. It’s a well-deserved investment in the heroes who have served our country with honor."

A Collaborative Effort for Our Veterans

The Delaware Senate Republicans also recognized the efforts of U.S. Senators Tom Carper and Chris Coons, as well as Representative Lisa Blunt Rochester, for their leadership in advocating for the project. Their support was instrumental in making this important development a reality for Delaware's veterans.

The new Veterans Affairs medical facility represents a long-overdue step toward improving healthcare access and quality for those who have served in the military. It is a testament to the power of collaboration between state and federal representatives to address the needs of our nation’s veterans, particularly in regions that have been historically underserved.

As the process moves forward, Delaware’s veterans and their families can look forward to a stronger, more accessible healthcare network—one that ensures they receive the care they deserve, closer to home.
